We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful comments that our “Hay Makers” have written in our Guest Book.
Please excuse us for sharing so many of them on this page ...
Lizzie and Stephen
Thank you Stephen and Lizzie for making such a lovely holiday cottage and arranging some un-Welsh weather to enhance our experience of it. We very much admire the care and attention you have devoted to developing the property, which sits so well in it’s setting. We only wish our home could be half as energy efficient!
We came with the intention of doing some walking (and cycling in my case) and testing out the hound’s reaction to a new environment and a range of wildlife. Successful in every respect: walks in Tintern (from the Old Station), up and down and round the SugarLoaf, and around Symonds Yat Rock were all beautiful and testing enough for the humans at least. The dog had a great time, failing to catch any squirrels and choosing not to mix with a family of wild pigs at Symonds Yat. The modest cycling expeditions were … challenging! Very hilly round these parts! Many thanks to you both

The Hayshed is a haven of peace and tranquility. Sitting out on the terrace overlooking the beautiful Welsh countryside I could feel myself unwind and my stresses float away on the breeze that rustles through the leaves of the newly planted woodland. It is a wonderfully calm place to sit, relax and ponder.
The Hayshed is ideally located, beautifully appointed with everything you could wish for and sympathetically renovated and coloured in the tones of the Welsh countryside - blue grey slate and rich warm oak. Well done Stephen and Lizzie.
We will certainly return and next time we will bring our three children … or perhaps we won’t !
Lindy and Niall - Cookham Dean
We have had a relaxing time in your lovely holiday cottage. Not only is it so well appointed, but the view from the window could not be better! Val and I both enjoy a bit of bird watching, so it was particularly enjoyable for us to follow the flight of the buzzard, try to locate where it was roosting and also to enjoy the activities of the smaller species.
You benefit from a central location and we enjoyed our trips out to Monmouth, Abergavenny, Ross, Hereford and the castles nearby. White Castle is so evocative of the bygone age !
Paul and Val - Cheshire
Thank you Stephen and Lizzie, we have all had such a lovely week at the Hayshed. The weather was great and we spent time visiting some beautiful places around Monmouth Clearwell, Coleford.
There is nothing more the cottage needs you have provided everything possible. We only wish we could live here permanently. We really will look to come back and stay again soon! Lewis really loved the attic room and seeing the cows from the window and riding his bike in the field. For anyone staying with children visit Perrygrove railway, Elton Mazes, Pusslewood, Symonds Yat river for a lovely walk.
Charlotte, Dave and Lewis - Kent
We have had a very enjoyable week staying in this lovely place. The Hayshed is super - very well equipped and beautifully decorated. We loved the views from the windows and we were pleased to see the barn owl right outside in the late evenings on two ocassions. It’s a great place for bird-watching - we also met a buzzard sitting on the fence on our way in one day.
The weather has been good with only a bit of rain and we have visited interesting places - Symonds Yat, The Waterfalls in the brecon Beacons and Tintern Abbey. Monmouth is a very useful little town - we had a reasonably good pub meal at the Robin Hood, and found the Waitrose very handy!
This is a lovely, peaceful area and we have really enjoyed the tranquility of the place.
Roger, Fiona and Simon - Dartford
We organised this break to celebrate out 30th Wedding Anniversary. We like to stay in architecturally interesting houses and we loved out stay at the Hayshed. We very much liked the quiet and peaceful location with access to walks from the door step. On one ay we walked to Skenfrith, with a rather obvious stop at the Bell, and then cross country to return (a little later than expected!) in the evening.
A wonderful place to watch the wildlife with the buzzards souring over and hearing the owls at night.
We would highly recommend the Stonemill restaurant at Rockfield which is only a short distance. We chose from the market menu and were very impressed with the food that may have well been from the a la carte. Pregos Bistro in Monmouth was also good and the lunch at The Bell at Skenfrith was very good with excellent service.
A short break but a very relaxing time and although we live near Bristol we felt like it could have been much further from home.
Mark and Sue - Bristol
This was the perfect place for our Bank holiday weekend break. The Hayshed is beautifully decorated and designed. Loved sitting out on the deck chairs in the sunshine reading a book and enjoying the view.
Enjoyed exploring Monmouth, Tintern Abbey (excellent cake in the Anchor Inn), Sugarloaf and all the many castles. Had a great meal in the Bell at Skenfrith last night too. We are also heading hoe with a car full of ‘Apple Country Cider’!
Thank you Lizzie and Stephen for making us feel welcome and providing such a good base for our holiday. We will be back and recommending this place to family and friends!
Amy and Ashley - Kenilworth
The Hayshed is amazing! Perfectly decorated and a real ‘at hone’ feel. The views are beautiful, had some lovely photographs of our son and doggy enjoying the outside area.
We have really enjoyed our daily visits from the cows in the neighbouring field! We felt there were no improvements needed at the Hayshed… it had everything we required. Stephen and Lizzie are extremely welcoming and friendly. We’ll definitely be spreading the word and coming back ourselves in the future.
Rebecca, Anthony, George - Wimborne
Lovely holiday home in a beautiful setting! Fantastic views and plenty of wildlife to watch. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and a much needed rest. Thank you.
Karen and Andy - High Wycombe
We have all had the most wonderful week here. We were all in need of a holiday and a break after such a hectic year so far - what a place of peace the Hayshed is! We found everything we needed here; comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen, soft sofas, a beautiful bathroom, thick bath towels and an idyllic view.
The Hayshed is perfectly situated to access many local places of beauty and interest yet providing a place of retreat at the end of every day.
Our hightlights include trecking the local casltes; White, Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. Tintern Abbey and the Old Station; we loved the views from the Devils Pulpit and Symmonds Yat and exploring the towns of Monouth, Abergavenny and Chepstow. Thank you Stephen and Lizzie for an unforgettable holiday in this beautiful place!
Andrew, Shirley, Sarah, Rachel and dog Lacey - Wirral
We’ve enjoyed our weekend in the beautiful and peaceful Hayshed. Thank you for the lovely sweet peas which have scented the air. It’s our first visit to this area and we love the countryside and the little towns of Hay-on-Wye and Monouth. We had a lovely meal in the Stonemill nearby.
Desmond and Chris - Edinburgh
A very lovely cottage, peaceful and beautiful setting for a last minute get away. We loved Hay-on-Wye, Sugar Loaf and Henrhyd Falls, all great day outs! We have been very comfortable here and would definitely come back.
Mitch and Phoebe - London
Booked fairly last minute as a break from caring responsibilities and this was just the tonic! Peace and tranquility, comfortable and luxurious. Loved everything about it! Monmouth - Waitrose food shopping with some lovely real ale selections, tapas the ‘The Punch Bowl’ (top end of high street, open all day). Enjoyed a boat trip from Symonds Yat West, drive up to the top of Sugar Loaf mountain, Skenfrith Castle…very fortunate with the weather.
On our last evening , paid a visit to the Stonemill. Well worth it! Lizzie and Stephen, you have a wonderful spot here - so very generous of you to share it with others! I’m certain we’ll be back sometime!
Simone and Andy - Reading
We booked this quite late as we were both needing a break and change of scene. Like all your other guests, we have enjoyed the peaceful setting, lovely views and beautifully appointed accommodation. Its the most attractive staircase - a delight to go up and down! We’ve enjoyed exploring Tintern, Hay-on-Wye, Abergavenny and Hereford as well as Monmouth. Weather not bad for late October. We’ve seen a Wren and a squirrel right outside the patio doors and were greatly amused by about 20 small partridges trying to run down the road away from the car! They seemed to have forgotten that they could fly.
Marueen and Chris - Finchley
We all really enjoyed our stay, a beautiful place to be. We loed our daily visits from the bullocks, who were very interested in the dog! There are some lovely walks around here, especially in Symonds Yat, where you can walk up a very steep hill or walk along both sides of the river. When you walk up the hill, you get a great view of the Wye river. You can also d a boat trip, 40 mins up and down the river. Good pubs to visit: Saracens Head, The Inn at Penalt and The Bell at Skenfrith. Monmouth is such a lovely town and so useful to us - (Mum really loved Waitrose).
Kevin, Sue, Telidga, Hamish, and Poppy the dog - Shorne
We have had a wonderful stay in the beautiful Hayshed, thank you so much. We have mainly been out walking with Freddie in a sling (Sugar Loaf was a bit of an endurance test!) and have thoroughly enjoyed the peace, views and fresh air. We had a couple of really good meals at the Stonemill and enjoyed a trip to Raglan Castle, as well as Bonfire Night in Monmouth. We also had a lovely day trip to Hay-on-Wye, having lunch at Richar Booth’s Bookshop Cafe, which was excellent.
You have created a really stunning holiday home here, we will definitely be recommending you ro friends and family!
Emily, Tom and Freddie (aged 7 months) - Cambridge
We had a lovely stay in gorgeous surroundings, everything has been thought of that you need.
Can highly recommend the Stonemill restaurant. My girlfriend brought me here as a birthday weekend surprise and it was an amazing surporse. Lovely short walks near by as well.
Stuart and Kate - Newbury
We have had a lovely stay in the Hayshed, thank you for such a warm welcome!
Weather wasn’t great on the Friday, we had planned to walk in the surrounding area but we made up for it on Saturday and Sunday! Fantastic ‘local’ walks from the Hayshed and Sunday we went into the Wye Valley and did a 4 hour walk with Molly, our Border Collie! We had a lovely meal at Pizzorante in Abergavenny, would recommend a visit. We think the Hayshed is superb, a very well thought out layout and extremely well equipped. The views are amazing! We had hoped to be back at Easter but it was a shame to find the Hayshed is already booked! We are clearly the last to find the ‘wow’ property! Thank you again for a wonderful short stay, we really do hope to be back at sometime.
Kathryn and Andy - Rutland
Thanks to Lizzie and Stephen for such a peaceful getaway. The Hayshed was perfect, and the surrounding scenery is unreal. These few days were a breath of fresh air - literally! We hope the woodland grows well.

Thank you for your warm welcome, our weekend at the Hayshed was spent celebrating sunny’s birthday and mothers’ day. The cottage is beautitul and a lot of thought has gone into the modern decor.
Our two year old son Arjun loved running around in the fields, watching the sheep and making an indoor tent.
Overall our visit was very relaxing and a lot of time was spent looking at the views. We enjoyed Mothers’day at the Forest of Dean and loved going on the steam engine. We would highly recommend family and friends to visit the Hayshed.
Sunny, Nick and Arjun - Birmingham

A beautiful cottage in magnificent surroundings. We love the peaceful setting and our daughter and friend enjoyed exploring and simply being outside!
We had a lovely meal at the Stonemill. the following night we booked the Bell at Skenfrith and were disappointed - waited ages for our food which was just ‘ok’. wish we’d gone for Prego instead.

It’s every bit as good as it looks on the website! We’ve had a wonderful few days, five days action packed out and about and the evenings relaxing, admiring the view and taking in the peace and tranquility.
Accommodation is very well equipped all round, very comfortable and has everything you need. Lizzie and Stephen were very welcoming and although we didn’t need any help during our stay, I am sure they would have been more thank happy to help!

The Hayshed is a perfect getaway for a Birthday break. Great views and a sense of space. Gussy, our cocker spaniel enjoyed keeping a watchful eye on the comings and goings of the bullocks - just in case, you understand!
The Hayshed is a delightful place, everything you could want cleverly slotted into a small space. When we came we had both come from lots of travelling and in need of a good night’s sleep and this bd has to be one of the comfiest! Everything is beautifully finished, with lots of lovely touches.
Visited Hay-on-Wye and walked from Monmouth to Symonds Yat which was lovely.
Nicky, Tracey and Gussy - London
What a wonderful few days! We were so furtunate with the weather, and the Hayshed was a pure delight. Very well stocked kitchen, wonderful views and thank you for letting us ‘borrow’ it for a few days!
We had a tremendouse time at the Hayshed! Mum and dad were jelous cos me and my brother got the top floor! We speacilly loved the garden. When we wanted my baby bother to have a nap we would go round there! I really want to visit again. Dad really enjoyed all the near by walks. I really loved it here. Gracie aged 9

Lovely place, very relaxing, had some great walks and did a little shopping in Monmouth. Thank you for sharing the Hayshed - perfectly celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.
Jo and David - Colchester
My mother and I just loved the birdsong and the beautiful views. The Hayshed was spotless and so comfortable and we had everything we could possibly need. We had stunning weather and I enjoyed lovely walks from the door to the church through woods.
We very much enjoyed Abergavenny market and then found the fascinating St Issui Church at Patricio which escaped the Reformation. A word of warning: if you do there turn round at the church as there is nowhere to turn if you go straight on! I would love to come back to explore more widely.
Margaret - London
We have enjoyed a fab week at the Hayshed, the views and peace and quiet are very relaxing, we were lucky to it all in the sunshine.
Thank you to Stephen and Lizzie for the friendly welcome. Batteries recharged it’s back to the rat race!

We will certainly recommend The Hayshed to friends and family. Thanks Lizzie and Stephen for a great two weeks and thanks for the wine - I liked it so much I bought three more! All the best.

Thank you for creating the Hayshed. We fell in love with the place and the amazing views, the moment we arrived. Everything about the decor we absolutely love and we enjoyed our daily visit from the local cows too.
Lizzie and Stephen are more than helpful and friendly. The newly planted woodland is great, and we can’t wait to come back and see how it has grown.
Whilst here we have been to Tintern Abbey, Pedal a bike away in the Forest of Dean, The Kymin and Symonds Yat - all must do’s! This trip has been just what we needed, and I am so happy that I found this total gem!
Thanks again, see you again next year.
Emma and Scott - Essex
What a stunning place to stay in, we are most impressed with the design and quality of workmanship put into the Hayshed and the views have been just breathtaking. The well managed tree planting has been a delight to walk through.
We have done lots of lovely things in very agreeable weather - the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail and some lakes where Polly the dog learned to swim and we all got a bit wet! We climbed up the Sugar Loaf and walked beside the river Wye at Symonds Yat as well as admiring the view from the top. Apart from enjoyable visits to Monmouth, Abergavenny and Crickhowell, one of our favourite visits was to White Castle, most impressive, with moat and ramparts, so peaceful that we did a little painting and from there went to Skenfrith Castle and were joined by youngsters from Monmouth school who had been tidying up the Brecon Beacons, everyone was so friendly.
Thank you for most enjoyable holiday. The Hayshed, the right castle for us!
Christine, Michael, Ruth and Polly (the dog) - Hastings
What a fantastic venue for our first holiday as a family of three! Beautiful location - so peaceful with amazing views and wildlife to watch. We loved exploring the woodland (especially Jonah who was fascinated by the trees).
The Hayshed itself is gorgeous. Very spacious considering its size with everything you need. We love the patio - much more interesting to look outside than at the TV! Lizzie and Stephen have been fantastic ‘hosts’ and made us feel extremely welcome - nothing was too much trouble, and we were so grateful at how kind you have been to us - it felt like visiting friends!
Your passion for the Hayshed is very apparent and you should be very proud!
Mat, Lucy and Jonah (aged 6 months) - Manchester
Whilst we only live 40 minutes away from the Hayshed, it could be a thousand miles, in terms of the tranquility, the views, the sounds and smells. We have been privileged to stumble upon this spot, and can’t quite get over how beautiful it is here. The cottage itself is immaculate. There is nothing I could ask for that hasn’t been thought of.
We have had some lovely walks, and our black lab collie has been in heaven! It was particularly lovely to walk to the Hendre and back across the fields, through Llangattock church, when we met the gentleman from the Manor House cutting the grass in the grave yard, and gave us a potted history of the Rolls family, and showed us the monument to Charles Rolls himself. We also had a lovely afternoon in Monmouth, and an excellent meal in the very dog friendly Clytha Arms near Raglan.
This has been a perfect retreat, and the longest long weekend I can recall! I have made a promise to myself to come back in the Autumn, (if I can wait that long) - it will be lovely to see the trees on the turn. Oh well, back to reality now - 40 minutes up the road! Thank you for creating this place!
John and Sarah - Hereford
Amazing!! What a fabulous place this is - both the cottage and the surroundings. We were made to feel so welcome, the gift was a lovely touch. Stephen and Lizzie, you have created a wonderfully peaceful, calm and comfortable haven from the world at the Hayshed. Thank you.

The Allans - Hitchin
Gorgeous cottage! Our two girls particularly loved their attic bedroom, the staircase with the twinkly lights and the cows! We have had a wonderfully relaxing time. Thank you.
In terms of places to visit we returned to sample (and stock up on) the Ancre Hill vineyard wines. We’d wholeheartedly recommend a visit, a tour and sitting out with a cheese board on a sunny day. We also enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch at Prego in Monmouth.
Powell family - Berkhamsted
WAW! What a fantastic place - you’ve done an amazing job of renovating the Hayshed! You’ve given us a lot of inspiration and ideas for out future farmhouse. Such a peaceful location - fantastic to hear all the birds while having breakfast outside in the morning. This week was just what we needed, we’ll be heading back home completely relaxed. Thank you very much and see you again.

What a find! This is a beautifully finished property, with wonderful views. We loved the peace and quiet, broken only by the sound of cattle and birds! The Hayshed is very well equipped and we loved the sense of indoor/outdoor living space.
We had a fantastic hike up Sugar Loaf, followed by a barbecue in the evening. We also enjoyed visiting the Birds of Prey Centre in Newent and a visit to Tintern Abbey.
Thank you for making this property so special and for the generous welcome gifts. We would love to visit again.
